Chapter Seven

It felt very strange to be heading back into the library the next day. The last time she’d been there, the donation money had been stolen. More recently, she’d received the news about Glenn. For the first time in her life, the library was the last place Courtney wanted to be.

Of course, it was also the best source of information in all of Curly Bay, and she had someone who knew how to make the most of that information. Lisa was sitting at her place behind the circulation desk, but she looked up with a small smile when she saw Courtney. “Did you have plenty of coffee this morning? Because I have big plans for us.”

“Then it’s a good thing I have the day off.” Courtney had plenty of things she ought to be doing with her day off work, but Glenn Hughes had become the top priority on her list. It truly bothered her that something happened to the man, even if he was a grump. “And yes, I’ve had plenty of coffee.”

“Good. Nora, if you’ve got the desk for a bit, I’m going to help Courtney look up some information.” Lisa turned to her coworker as she stood.

Nora glared up at Courtney and then back at Lisa. “Don’t be too long. I don’t want to be late for my break today.”

“Don’t worry. I won’t get lost in the archives.” Lisa locked her computer and led the way down a short hall and to a room separate from the rest of the library.

“I don’t want my research to create a problem for you,” Courtney said when they were alone. “You can just show me where you keep everything, and I’ll take it from there.”

Lisa made a face. “Don’t worry about Nora. She’s always like that, even though nobody has ever stopped her from taking her breaks. I think maybe she just doesn’t trust people. Besides, I went into library science because I love research. I think there’s something exciting about digging up information and finding one thing that leads to another. I want to be in on this, too, especially since we’re talking about Glenn.”

“Good, because you probably know how to do it all a lot faster than I do. This isn’t going to be like just pulling things up on the internet, although that can be a rabbit hole in itself.” She glanced around at the all the filing cabinets that filled the room, wondering if they’d actually be able to find anything.

“Well, we’re going to start with the internet. Come here.” A table in the center of the room held two PCs on one side and two microfiche machines on the other. Lisa signed in to one of the PCs and pulled up a website. “Our county puts all their court data on a public file. You can’t see every tiny detail, but you can see when someone has been arrested or on trial.”

“Wouldn’t we already know if something like that had happened to Glenn?” Courtney asked as she pulled up a chair.
